At the age of 19 he was euthanized on Oct. 4, 1989 due to complications from laminitis. His autopsy showed that SECRETARIAT had the largest heart ever recorded for any horse, at 22 lbs., more than double the usual weight.
SECRETARIAT was named #35 in ESPNs 100 greatest athletes of the century and was the only non-human on the list. He is known as the greatest racehorse that has ever lived.
